Braai Essentials: There’s no doubt, that when it comes to anything meat, Karaglen SuperSpar’s award-winning meat man Marius, is your go-to guy. This National Braai Day, Marius has agreed to let us all in on a few Braai Day secrets.

Braai Day is celebrated on September 24 every year. And, it’s no coincidence that it falls on Heritage Day. Braai is part of South Africa’s heritage. It gives us a chance to meet up with family and friends and spend the day basking in the sun.

Marius’ Braai Essentials

Marius is no stranger to the world of meat. He’s been a butcher for longer than most of us have been braai’ing. In fact, he’s been a butcher for 32 years. Over the year’s he’s built up quite the knowledge base. Here are a few things he considers to be essential for EVERY braai:

The Perfect Meat

At the top of Marius’ list is good quality meat. Marius prefers to braai rump but also says lamb is always a winner on the braai. He says that when it comes to meat, the recently launched Dry Aged range from Karaglen SuperSpar should be at the top of your Braai Day shopping list this year. Remember that stocks are limited so be sure to get yours before it’s all sold out.

The Right Braai

This might seem to be a no-brainer. But you need to have the perfect braai. If you’re having a small braai, there’s no need to light up a large one. And, if you’re braai’ing for a large crown you don’t want to be using a small cooker. The braai you choose to use should be situation fitting.

The Right Tools

Your essential braai kit should include; togs, a sharp knife, a cutting board, apron, spices and a “bak”. Without these you’ll find yourself lost at the fire.

The Perfect Spices

If you are not sure which spices to use, pop into the Karaglen Butchery and ask Marius or a member of his team for advice. The spices you use should be tasty, complement the meat and would not over-power the taste of the vleis you choose.

Your Perfect Braai Day Winning Combo

Marius says that while everyone has different taste in meats, you don’t want your braai to be overly heavy on one sort of meat. This means you need to put a little thought into how you balance your braai. Here are six braai combinations you can consider for Braai Day:
